Massachusetts Gubanatorial Democratic Primary.

This is a race which hasn't gotten much attention out here in the national blogsphere.

However it should, because it will be the biggest primary upset in the nation next year.

Deval L Patrick, a former assistant attorney general for WJC, ex-corporate executive and public interest lawyer has the support of the activist community, a good number of Republicans and Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts.  He is also an sub saharan African who has had to deal with the racism that people of that racial type are forced to deal with due to the lingering effects of America's troubled past.

He is the underdog in this race due only to two factors, a current name recognition gap and fundraising gap between himself and the uninspiring party hack Attorney General Tom Reilly who seemingly feels its his time to be governor.  But, when no one on the ground is actually driven to support you with any passion what chance are you going to have in the general election against a Republican such as Christy Mihoes who is proposing to end tolls outside of Route 128 and other government slashing programs that will resonate with ignorant voters who still think Massachusetts has high taxes when we are actually Fourtysixth in total taxes levied.

If you doubt my assertions just watch these two clips of the two cannidates speaking at the Massachusetts Democratic Convention this past spring and look over Reilly's DC Consultant website and Patrick's grassroots built and operated website.

You clearly don't understand the toll issue ... (none / 0)

The issue of removing the tolls has nothing to do with the place where Massachusetts is on taxes.
The tolls need to be taken down because the turnpike needs to be rolled into the entire MassHighway system. It would save millions of dollars per year to the bottom line and would not hurt service on any of the highways.
The tolls also need to be taken down because they are regressively placed on a certain population in the state. They are inherently unfair. People who travel west to east are paying for people who drive north to south or south to north! The tolls are corruptly being used to pick up the state's cost in paying for the Big Dig - a totally different section of the state's highway system!
As a former resident of Massachusetts for 18 years before moving back to New Hampshire, thankfully, I can tell you that the Turnpike Authority squanders money and what Mihos has been saying about the tolls is dead-on correct.

As far as Deval Patrick goes, he seems like a nice enough guy. But it is shocking that he has blown through almost $1 million and the actual primary is 11 months away! He has about $225,000 on hand - but he is losing $10k a month over what he is bringing in. He is paying Dan Payne's consulting company $10k a month ... for what? He paid Kiley & Co. $14k for "research" ... research on what? He paid another consultant - from Maine - $18k over the summer. It is always best to hire in-state folks when you are running for governor. It is too early to be paying consultants this kind of money when this phase of the campaign is about going around and meeting with activists around the state. What I also worry about is what these folks are being paid for. If you don't know what you stand for a year before an election, there is a serious problem [You can find his expenditure lists by clicking here: http://www.efs2.cpf.state.ma.us/EFSprod/servlet/WelcomeServlet ]
This isn't a good sign for what should be a promising campaign.

As for Patrick being a victim of racism, I can't really comment on it. I don't know for sure. But what I do know is that the guy seems to have lived a pretty priviledged life. I mean, he lives in Milton - not Roxbury, Dorchester, Lowell, or Fall River. It seems kind of a stretch to say he is a victim of racism.

Re: You clearly don't understand the toll issue .. (none / 0)

Re: the consulting, when would you suggest doing research, the week before the primary?  In order to win a statewide primary, a candidate needs to formulate a strategy early on that will play out over a year or more.  Having the research to know where their opponent is weak (voting records, office  dealings etc) is crucial to whatever media strategy the candidate will employ.

As far as using in state people vs out of state people, while in-state people can do a great job, there is no need to strictly use in-state people.  In a primary, in state people can be bad because they have a lot of contacts within the state Democratic circles, and you generally don't want people on your staff at that point who will be blabbing all of your campaign secrets when they get a few drinks in them.

Paying $10K a month might be dumb if you're not getting $10K of work for it, but paying money for work or information that is worth the money is never a bad idea.  But then, I'm sure most people turn to blog comments to decide how to run their campaigns.

Reilly's my guy.

And G-d willing, a Dem will take back the Governor's mansion.

The Kentucky Democrat

Patrick grew up in Chicago's projects. (3.00 / 1)

and had to work his way to get out of them.  That was what I was referring to when it come to mentioning his being effected by racism.  Also, his campaign manager was Kerry's 2004 Maine state coordinator so I figure I must of met some people who impressed him up their last year.

Additionally, the Kentucky Democrat is fooling himself if he feels that Birch Bayh III is going anywhere come 2008, I personally think he is going to have a hard time carrying his own state in a primary due to the fact that Mark Warner is Indiana born and Hillary Clinton has been a statewide campaign manager there and likely has some contacts left over from that experience even though it was in 1976.

I support Reilly (none / 0)

He is quite adequate and can beat any Republican candidate. Both Reilly and Galvin are able to beat Patrick in primary. And i would think about voting for Mihos in hypothetical Patrick-Mihos matchup...

That's sad to hear. (none / 0)

We don't need average public servants we need amazing people to take up that call and prove to young Americans that it is not a Sirens call.

I personally subscribe to something President Clinton said years ago  "I feel the only things we have yet to achieve are the things we have yet to dream."  So start dreaming and stop settling for people who have no vision or courage, because without a vision America will perish.
